These days, you hear a lot about thread count (TC) which  is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric.  We carry sheets that range from 200 to 600  TC.  In general, the higher TC the softer the fabric feels and the more durable the sheets are.  Some box stores offer sheets with a higher than 700 TC which is somewhat of a farce.  The Manufacturers of these sheets twist two threads in a way that lets them double the sheet's thread count or they have double ply sheets (ie 200 TC on top of  200 TC = 400 TC).  This does not strengthen or soften the sheets in any way.  As of late, many bedding manufacturers have been advertising that high TC is the best way to choose sheets however, the quality of the fibers and finish is the key to the sheet's comfort and durability. 

In fact, sheets made of linen, flannel, some poly blends and jersey can have lower TC due to the type of fabric.  A high TC would eliminate part of the appeal of these sheets.
